Global Scientist Award ‘Wings of Dreams’ Implementation Guidelines

1 PURPOSE

  Humanity has benefited from advances in science and technology and developed society. The advancement of science and technology is indispensable for humanity to coexist with nature and build a healthy society in the future. In particular, the development of young people interested in science and technology is an urgent issue for Japan and the international community. Therefore, in order to foster young people’s interest in science and technology and to nurture their dreams for science and technology, an international science competition “Global Scientist Award “Wings of Dream”” will be held in Kagoshima, where the foundation of modern Japan was laid during the Meiji Restoration, with a view to the next 100 years.


2 Outline of the competition

(1) Date 12 November 2023 (Sunday) 9:00-15:15(Japan Standard Time )

(2) Presentation format     Hybrid (real [Shiroyama Hotel] and online [zoom])

      Oral presentation with slides, 8 minutes for presentation and 4 minutes for Q&A.  Language: Japanese or English.

    (Notes) Research should be conducted over the last year, and citations to newspapers, books, previous research, etc. must be clearly indicated. If the research is found to be false or to infringe on the copyright or other rights of a third party, it may be isqualified from the judging or the award may be withdrawn even after the judging  is completed, after consultation.

(3) Eligibility: 

     High school students (prizes will be awarded after judging), junior high school students and primary schools students (no judging, encouragement prizes for all groups)

3 Application procedure

(1) Applications must be registered via the website. No other applications will be accepted.

(2) Abstracts may be freely formatted and should be no more than two pages of A4 paper. The abstracts must arrive no later than 30 October 2023 (Monday). (Overdue abstracts will be        disqualified.) Upload the abstracts after converting them to PDF format from the website.

(3) The application period will start on 1 September 2023 (Friday) and the first 90 entries will be accepted.


4 Schedule and awards 

(1) Schedule(JST)

   ①Opening ceremony: 9.00 – 9.05 am.

  ②Research presentation I (first round : all teams): 9.05 – 11.00 am 

          ※The order of presentation will be decided by strict lottery.

          the finalist teams will be announced after the first round.

   Research Presentation II (second round : final judging teams) 11.20am – 1.50pm 

          ※All participants are supposed to watch the presentation. 

  ③Lecture : 14:00-15:00

  (Professor, Institute for Earth and Life Sciences, Tokyo Institute of Technology / Team Leader, RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science)

   ④Critique, awards and closing ceremony: 15:00-15:15 

(2) Awards

  High school student section

     6 groups of Excellence Award, including 1 group of Grand Prize Award, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award.

     One of the six teams will be awarded the Kagoshima Governor’s Prize.           

   fuRo Innovation Award and Ikeda Gakuen Ikeda Elementary, Junior High and High School Award (In principle, selected from all presentations by high school students)

   Primary school students’ section Junior high school students’ section Encouragement prize for all teams

※The number of each award may be changed according to the number of presentations.  Encouragement prizes will be awarded to those not selected. Special prizes may also be awarded by consensus of the jury.
